Show Details:
This is U2’s 32nd show at Sphere, Las Vegas, NV. The full listing of shows can be found in our show archive. These shows will be played without Larry Mullen who is healing from surgery to repair years of damage from drumming. U2 was joined onstage by Bram van den Berg for this show.
Tonight’s set list is the same show as was performed last Saturday. (February 3) Although the main songs are the same, Bono takes an opportunity to work in a lot of pieces of songs by other artists tonight. A few notable new additions include Donna Summer’s “State of Independence” during “Mysterious Ways” as well as “We Are the World”. Another snippet is a little closer to home. During “All I Want is You” Bono stops to sing a bit of “High Life”, a song from the film Flora and Son. In the film, the song is sung by Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson and her co-star Orén Kinlan. As he finishes “High Life” he moves into “Walk on the Wild Side” tonight. During “Beautiful Day” Bono includes a number of references including Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” singing “take me to the church”, U2’s own “Gloria” which he interrupts to sing a brief line from Zucchero and Pavarotti’s “Miserere” (with lyrics by Bono) before returning to “Gloria”, and he finishes off with “Blackbird” at the end of the song. (More details on other songs follow below.)
After “The Fly” Bono asks the crowd “How are you?” and shares he wants to know “on a Super Bowl weekend because you are all paying a fortune for your hotel rooms, we are also paying a fortune for our hotel rooms.” Introducing “Mysterious Ways” Bono shares a story, “Tonight we’re all feeling very much alive and I’m grateful for it. I said to Quincey Jones one day, I said that line, ‘great to be alive’. He looked at me and goes ‘Great to be alive? Great to be alive? It’s crucial man!’ As is some flirtation. Come on. It’s carnival next week.”
During “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World” Bono still hasn’t been able to find his keys to get home after weeks of asking. He starts by asking The Edge tonight, he then asks his daughter, “Evey have you seen my keys?” and then asks Irish musician Sorcha Richardson if she has seen his keys.
Ahead of “Desire” Bono introduces the band, “Not since October 1978 have we played a show without Larry Mullen Junior who we send our love to this evening. It was only right, that I start by introducing the man who saved the day, who saved our arses as they were sticking out the window. His name is Bram van den Berg. Sitting while flying Dutchman. Actually, anything you’d like to share with us this evening?” Bram takes the mic and speaks in Dutch. When Bono asks what was said, Bram shares, “I had an intimate moment, my brother is in the room, so was talking to him.” Adam Clayton is introduced as “Now ladies, I mean ladies, and some gentlemen. Forget where we go to work, look who we go to work with. A magnificent man, with a magnificent moustache, on the bass, Tom Selleck. Adam Clayton!” The Edge gets an intro we’ve heard before, “On my right in a town full of magicians, a true alchemist, turning our shite into gold on a daily basis, our card-playing card-carrying genius, The Edge.” Bono also takes time to introduce himself, “also at the center of attention, if you’re not talking about him he ain’t listening, mouth almighty, a giant in his own mind. On vocals…Bono Vox!”
Like the last handful of shows, Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas” is used as intermission music tonight, before U2 take the stage to a remix of “Elevation”. During “Elevation” Bono stops to give a shout out to Hozier who is at the show this evening, “We believe in you Hozier…yes…we…do…” (Hozier’s dad was part of the Dublin band Free Booze who were doing the bar circuit at the same time U2 were starting out.)
Ahead of “Beautiful Day” Bono stops to thank the audience for a wonderful night. “We’re at journey’s end, here inside Es Devlin’s Nevada ark. For those of you who have come a great distance, thank you for getting us to our destination. This has been an amazing time. Really a great time. I’m sure there’s something else I could say. It’s a French word. Brigitte? What is that word? Encore…it’s a beautiful day…”
Other snippets included “Drive My Car” as Bono thanks Pauli the PSM after “Zoo Station”, and “Love Me Tender” at the end of “One”. “Until the End of the World” gets “Sympathy for the Devil”, “Paint it Black” and “Two Tribes”. Bono adds U2’s own “Landlady” over the start of “Tryin’ to Throw My Arms Around the World”. “Viva Las Vegas” falls over the end of “Love is Blindness” and “My Way” comes in at the end of “Elevation”. “Moment of Surrender” is heard over the start of “Where the Streets Have No Name”. At the end of the show as the song rumoured to be by U2 and Brittany Howard comes on the PA, Bono briefly sings along to the song, repeating “Glorify, glorify”.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Martha Stewart were both in attendance at this show.
