Video Information

The video starts with several people “getting up” and walking out of their homes and into the street. We see the members of U2 each walking as well. The video then switches to a warehouse type space where the band are performing, while a young lady walks out of the space and into the street, where suddenly she becomes a young boy being taunted by bullies. They push him to the ground, and suddenly he’s an older man.

Each onlooker is in some sort of peril, and they must find the strength to “walk on”, which each person blinking in and out of the scenes, replacing the person that was there before. At the end an interesting camera effect is used as people stand together and the camera zooms out, gradually becoming an eye of the next level of zooming out.

The video was filmed in the King’s Cross area of London.

The U218 Videos DVD lists this as having been filmed in February 2001, in London England, and other sources list it around the end of March when the Brit Awards took place. The video premiered on March 1, 2001 on Canadian stations Musique Plus and Much Music (World Premiere).

On October 1, 2020, U2 added a new higher resolution version of this video to their YouTube channel, available at a resolution of 3840×2160 as part of the 20th anniversary reissue of All That You Can’t Leave Behind.
